How do I pick a surf spot as a beginner?
Small waves, sandy bottom, lifeguards, and other beginners already out. In that order.
Look for waves under waist-to-chest high, a sandy bottom, no rocks or reef in the impact zone, lifeguards on the beach, and a mellow, mixed-level lineup. Avoid crowded expert spots even if the parking is easier. Ask locals or check Sploot's spot pages. Being the worst surfer at a beginner spot is fine. Being the worst at an advanced spot is dangerous.
