Ocean safety
Is surfing actually dangerous?
Less than driving to the beach. More than reading in bed. Respect it and it respects you back.
The real risks are drowning after a bad hold-down, hitting your own board, hitting the bottom in shallow reef, and hitting other people. Beginners get injured mostly by their own board. Cover your head when you fall, learn to read where you are in the lineup, and never surf a spot beyond your level just because a friend can. Ocean literacy is the safest gear you own.
