Getting started
What is a set wave?
The bigger waves that come in groups every few minutes, with lulls in between.
Waves don't arrive evenly. They come in sets, usually 3 to 8 bigger waves grouped together, followed by a calm lull. Experienced surfers count sets and time their paddle-out during lulls. If you see the horizon go dark and lumpy, a set is coming. Get outside the impact zone or take the whitewater on your head calmly.
